2021 marks the 20-year anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. As we pause to reflect upon the sorrow of that day, we also recall the dedication, commitment and strength of those who responded to the tragic events. As generations before us remember where they were on days that changed history, we will never forget the events of September 11.
On the anniversary of that fateful day, we honor the memory of nearly 3,000 people who tragically lost their lives in New York, Pennsylvania, and Washington, DC. We also honor the heroic acts of first responders and individuals who showed tremendous courage during and after the horrific attacks on our country.
We remember the courage and response of DEA employees. Immediately following the attack on the Pentagon, employees at DEA Headquarters, only a few hundred yards away, rushed to provide assistance. Similarly, employees in DEA’s New York Division office scrambled to help first responders, and people in need. In the following weeks, more than 1,000 DEA Special Agents volunteered to serve as Air Marshals on commercial airliners. DEA personnel also assisted in providing critical intelligence and operational support during the investigation and recovery efforts.
September 11 was one of the most tragic days in our country’s history. The following days were some of the most patriotic, as many Americans were inspired to serve their country.
While we shall never forget what happened, we must also remain committed to the cause of freedom, as we honor those who served and continue to serve on the front lines of the fight against terrorism.
