SAN DIEGO, CA - The final tally is in from the second National Prescription Take-Back Day this past Saturday, April 30, 2011. DEA and its partners took back prescription drugs at 29 locations in San Diego County and five locations in Imperial County.

Over the course of four hours, 5,890.5 pounds of drugs were turned into the locations in both counties, and 404 boxes were filled and sealed for destruction on Saturday. This represents an increase from last year of 1,003 pounds and 85 boxes.

“The 1,000 pound increase of pills that we took in this year’s event compared to last year lets DEA and its partners know that San Diegans are serious about getting rid of their unused medications”, said DEA San Diego Acting Special Agent in Charge William R. Sherman. “This kind of participation shows that Southern Californians are motivated to make their homes safer for our youth.”

Other participants in this initiative include the San Diego County Sheriff, La Mesa Police Department, El Cajon Police Department, Chula Vista Police Department, Sycuan Tribal Police Department, Carlsbad Police Department, Oceanside Police Department, National City Police Department, Coronado Police Department, Escondido Police Department, UCSD Police Department, San Diego County District Attorney’s Office, SD County Probation, Prescription Drug Abuse Task Force, HIDTA, California Border Alliance Group, San Diego Police Department, United States Marine Corps, US Navy, Federal Bureau of Investigation, Scripps Health Group, San Diego County Supervisor Pam Slater-Price, SD County Health & Human Serivces, Californians for Drug Free Youth, and San Diego County Prevention Coalitions, Calexico Police Department, Imperial Police Department, Calexico Police Department, El Centro Police Department, Brawley Police Department, Calipatria Police Department, California Highway Patrol, Imperial County Sheriff’s Office, El Centro Regional Medical Center, Pioneer’s Hospital, Imperial County Office of Education.
