15th Annual Red Ribbon Luncheon
Recipients are honored for exceptional efforts to create safe and drug-free communities
SAN DIEGO) - The Drug Enforcement (DEA) will participate in the 15th Annual Red Ribbon Luncheon on October 16 which will be attended by more than 225 civic and business leaders, educators, law enforcement, government officials, and youth to honor and award San Diego County individuals and organizations for their outstanding substance abuse prevention endeavors. The event will be hosted by Television Personality Mark Bailey.
Sparked by the murder of DEA Special Agent Enriqué (“Kiki”) Camarena by drug traffickers, the national Red Ribbon Campaign was created in 1986 to encourage people, young and old, to lead drug-free lives in honor of the sacrifices made by Kiki and others. Red Ribbon is a week-long event that takes place in schools and communities during the third week of every October all across the nation. The October 16 luncheon is the only event of its kind in Southern California.
The awards and honorees are as follows (winner’s names are announced at the luncheon - :
The Debi Nixon Education Award - is bestowed to an individual who works in the field of education and embodies the passion of drug prevention pioneer and educator Debi Nixon.
The Enrique “Kiki” Camarena Law Enforcement Award - is awarded to one individual serving in the law enforcement arena who works with their community to promote prevention and exemplifies the spirit of fallen DEA Special Agent, Enrique “Kiki” Camarena.
Outstanding Prevention Program Award - is awarded to an outstanding prevention program that best follows the federal and or county prevention platform strategies and or educational principles of effectiveness for research based programs and has demonstrated success and community impact through measurable outcome.
The Frank Goldsmith Lifetime Achievement Award - is awarded to an individual who has been a leader in the field of drug prevention for at least 10 years and is known for their iconic work and success in the field.
Excellence in Prevention Advocacy - awarded a person who has demonstrated excellence in leadership of sustained advocacy and promotion of alcohol, tobacco and/or drug prevention policies and/or norm change.
ABOUT RED RIBBON -
Red Ribbon Week began after the kidnapping, torture and murder of DEA Special Agent Enrique “Kiki” Camarena by drug traffickers in March 1985. The national campaign symbolizes support for efforts to reduce demand for drugs through prevention and education programs. Each year from October 23rd to October 31st thousands of schools, communities and drug abuse prevention organizations throughout the country distribute red ribbons to honor Special Agent Camarena’s memory and visibly show a dedication to be drug free. Approximately 80 million people participate in Red Ribbon drug prevention events and programs every year.
